Paulsen Backs Initiative to Protect Amateur Athletes following USA Gymnastics Scandal
01/30/18Washington, D.C. – Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-03) issued the following statement regarding Congress passing the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act:
“We must never let what was recently revealed to have taken place under USA Gymnastics to ever happen again,” said Congressman Paulsen. “Our young Olympians and amateur athletes deserve to be protected and should have confidence that they will not be victims of sexual abuse.”
Congressman Paulsen spoke on the House floor on the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act:
The Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act requires amateur athletic governing bodies to promptly report suspected cases of abuse, implement mandatory training, and establish policies and procedures for preventing, reporting, and addressing allegations of sexual abuse. This is in response to recent allegations of sexual abuse made against staff with USA Gymnastics, USA Swimming, and USA Taekwondo.
Congressman Paulsen is a longtime advocate for combating sex trafficking. He has authored multiple laws to help victims of trafficking including:
- The Stop Exploitation Through Trafficking Act;
- The Recovering Missing Children Act;
- The Child Sex Trafficking Data and Response Act.
Congressman Paulsen, a champion of small business and advocate of free enterprise, entrepreneurship, and innovation, serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, chairs the bicameral Joint Economic Committee, and is co-chair of the Congressional Medical Technology Caucus.
